Rachel is
a farmer's daughter, being around animals and dogs all her life.
Childhood days were spent competing and showing
horses and also was an active member of the North Staffordshire Pony Club; leaving it behind in her teens for the world
of travelling.
However, it was 'in the blood' to compete and once she started to attempt the complex world of
dog showing, all the competitive feelings came flooding back with a vengeance! Wayne also is a farmer’s son but
prefers not to be in the show ring and takes up the very important behind the scenes 'logistics' role!
We admired this beautiful breed for a number of years before waiting carefully until our
circumstances were right and acquired our foundation dog 'Castor' in 2002. We began showing in 2003 and were hooked!!
Wanting a relevant name to fit the history of Rhodesian Ridgebacks, it
was decided our affix would be 'Shombay' as it means 'he who walks like a lion" in Swahili.
This wonderful breed took over our hearts and we
then (now bitten by the ridgeback ‘bug’) decided to add another member to the family and so began the Shombay
Rhodesian Ridgebacks.
Our ridgeback family is growing slowly, but with
careful thought and consideration, Shombay are aiming to breed Rhodesian Ridgebacks that whilst remaining true to their original
breeding, are able to become wonderful family dogs and a loving addition to any home.
We will strive to breed Rhodesian Ridgebacks that are sound in conformation and temperament. Our dogs are first and
most importantly pets, live in the house as part of the family with our 5 year old son and we (and them) show as our
hobby.
Rachel and Wayne are Kennel Club Assured Breeders (please see below), are members of both the Rhodesian Ridgeback
Club of GB and the Midlands & Northern Rhodesian Ridgeback Club, so abiding to all their Codes of Ethics. Rachel is
also Show Manager with the RR Club of GB.
We all live in the beautiful county of Herefordshire in the
UK.
We
are extremely proud of our achievements so far and are looking forward to the 'Shombay' future!
